What is Upsetting in Forging?

Specific to tube swaging and pipe swaging, upsetting in forging is a process that involves compressing the end of a tube to make it thicker and wider. The heated tube end is squeezed between dies, causing it to “upset” or “bulge” outward. This operation increases the wall thickness and diameter at specific locations, commonly used to form tube connections, flanges, and reinforced sections.

Rigid Press Structures

Rigid Press Structures, including deep slides with high width-to-height ratios to accommodate the forces generated during a wide variety of metalforming applications. Designs are optimized using finite element analysis (FEA), resulting in increased part quality consistency through minimal deflection of the press frame and dies.

Advanced Press Controls provide precise control of bolster motion and feature multi-step profiling, including speed control, and pressure control with variable ramp rates between profiles to allow for highly configurable process control.

Accumulator Drive Packages are available when ultra-high pressing speeds are required. These packages are fully programmable and can be selected based on pre-stored part parameters.

Induction Furnaces can be integrated with the main press controls for pre-heating billets prior to extrusion or heat-treating after forming.

Part Temperature Control Packages ensure billet temperatures are within the specified range required. These packages are also typically provided with billet temperature reject chutes for billets that do not meet process requirements.

Automated Tubular/Billet Handling Systems can be supplied to receive, stage and feed raw billets through an induction heater and onto the press feeder. The press feeder then places each billet at the entrance to the heating container in the press on demand.

Slug Pushers & Scrap Conveyors can remove slugs and scrap material from the press, enhancing the process flow while reducing cycle times.

Die and Bed Plate Changing Systems are available for rapid and safe changing of dies. These are customizable and are available in a variety of configurations.

High-Ratio Guiding Systems are available with an automatic centralized grease lubrication package to provide precision guiding, parallel slide motion and enhanced eccentric load capacity.

Energy-Efficient Hydraulic Drive Packages featuring proportional flow control pumps and variable frequency drives can reduce energy consumption by up to 70% compared to conventional hydraulic drive packages.
