Unlocking the Full Potential of Rubber Pad Forming in Aerospace Maintenance Through 3D Printing

Rubber pad forming, elastoforming presses, and fluid cell presses have been essential for aircraft maintenance and aerospace production.  The emergence of 3D metal printing has allowed the rapid manufacturing of the tooling needed to manufacture aerospace parts of parts, enabling cost-effective, high-precision tools to be created faster than ever before. This combination of advanced forming and 3D printing of tools is especially valuable for aerospace, where quick turnarounds and the ability to handle complex geometries are critical. Coupled with state-of-the-art automation, these presses are now indispensable for both maintenance operations and production runs, ensuring efficiency and reliability for critical aerospace applications.

The History of Rubber Pad Forming, Fluid Cell, and Elastoforming Technology

The roots of today’s advanced forming technologies stretch back nearly a century. The Guerin Process, developed in the 1930s, was a breakthrough in aerospace manufacturing, enabling the production of complex sheet metal parts with minimal tooling.

This technique used a rubber pad to press sheet metal into a die, simplifying the forming process and reducing costs.

This technique used a rubber pad to press sheet metal into a die, simplifying the forming process and reducing costs.

Around the same time, the Verson-Wheelon process emerged, introducing inflatable rubber diaphragms combined with hydraulic pressure to produce more intricate shapes than the rubber that Guerin could acquire.

This innovation laid the foundation for modern fluid cell presses. While these advancements were developed independently, they shared the same goal: efficient, flexible manufacturing with reduced tooling complexity.

A hundred years later, despite advancements in elastomers, the results achieved through the Guerin and Wheelon processes remain virtually identical, showcasing their enduring effectiveness.

These days, elastoforming presses represent a modern twist on these time-tested processes. Thanks to advanced elastomers (synthetic rubbers) that were not available 100 years ago, elastoforming presses now surpass fluid cell presses in their ability to form intricate, high-precision parts.

These synthetic rubber products offer greater durability and under pressure, flow like a liquid, delivering exceptional forming results for even the most complex geometries. Essentially, this modernized elastoforming technology matches or exceeds the performance of traditional fluid cell presses, while retaining the cost and flexibility advantages of the original Guerin Process.

This proven technology, revitalized by modern materials, 3D tool printing and automation, continues to play a critical role in industries like aerospace, where precision, efficiency and adaptability are paramount. At Macrodyne, we build on this legacy to design custom solutions that combine the best of elastoforming and fluid cell technologies for today’s manufacturing challenges.
